A huge success story for Willie and Mary McGrath as founders of the West Clare Mini Marathon Charity, has been the opening of two single palliative care suites with ensuite assisted facilities, in Regina House, in Kilrush, in February 2004. The facility has benefitted from in excess of €180,000.00 in funding from Mini Marathon proceeds to date. The availability of palliative care in close proximity to the community of West Clare is of vital importance, as previously, the only alternative was for patients and their families to travel to Cahercalla, Galway or Limerick.
Ennistymon Community Hospital in North Clare has also benefitted from West Clare Mini Marathon funding for their Palliative Care Unit, ensuring that people can continue to avail of cancer care services in their locality.
The opening of the facility in Kilrush and support of the unit in Ennistymon is a phenomenal achievement and a huge step forward in the provision of cancer care for the people of West Clare and its environs.
